Orthodontics for Children
What is the best time to get an orthodontic consultation? Does my child need to be referred by their dentist to get an orthodontic consultation? It is never too early to get an evaluation and you do not need to be referred to do so. We recommend, as does the American Association of Orthodontists, that all children receive an orthodontic examination by the age of 7. Many orthodontic problems are best treated while a developing child has the most growth potential. By doing so, often times more complicated treatment, including extractions and surgery, can be avoided. In seeking an examination by this age, there will be adequate time to ensure that your child will be receiving the best possible care. At Bassin and Hession Orthodontics, the intial exam and consultation is done at no charge. This includes the records we take to assure a complete evaluation. Additionally, many children are placed on recall and observation until they have reached the point in their individual development when orthodontic treatment is needed. There is no charge to the patient family for this service as well. How can we do this? Well, quite frankly, we are certain that after experiencing our state of the art office, our caring staff, and our patient centered doctors, that you will choose Bassin and Hession Orthodontics for your orthodontic needs.
Our office uses the lastest in technology. We are a digital practice, using low dose digital x-ray equipment with your child's health and safety in mind. All of our clinical staff are either New York State Certified Dental Assistants or licensed Dental Hygienists and all are certified by the American Red Cross in CPR. Our sterilization procedures are tested and monitored monthly by an outside testing agency for our peace of mind and your child's safety. Our Doctors have advanced training in Orthodontics and are certified specialists in Orthodontics. Additionally, they are highly involved in the New York State Society of Orthodontists, the New York State Dental Association, and the Cleft Palate Team at Upstate Hospital in Syracuse.
Orthodontics for Teens
The age range of 11 to 15 years old represents the most common time to get braces. By age 11 or 12, most people have a full set of permanent teeth and are therefore ready to begin orthodontic treatment if required. Because crooked teeth and bad bites rarely correct on their own, getting started with braces at this time seems to work best for most people.
One of the common negatives of braces is peer pressure, or at least perceived peer pressure. What will my friends think? What will my coworkers, family, prospective employers, spouse, etc. think? Fortunately, peer pressure tends to be a very positive force for braces at this age.
As orthodontics have moved into mainstream America, an increasingly higher percentage of families are seeking orthodontic services for their children. Therefore, many youths today ask for braces when they see their friends beginning orthodontic treatment as a way of "fitting in" and going through a shared experience. While we certainly do not recommend braces for those individuals with already healthy bites and straight teeth, children who should benefit from braces are often easily convinced to have treatment since it is socially acceptable to do so at this age.
In addition to positive peer pressure, there are other reasons to have braces at this time. Adolescents at this age are growing very quickly as part of the pubertal growth spurt. This makes possible orthopedic changes to the shape and size of the jaws and may make a successful outcome more likely. Also related to the pubertal growth spurt is a generally higher rate of metabolism as pre- or early teens rapidly mature into their adult size. Orthodontists can use this high rate of metabolism to shorten treatment time and minimize soreness to teeth.
Orthodontics for Adults
Have you ever thought about getting a nicer smile, but thought you might be too old for orthodontic treatment? If so, you may want to speak to one of our doctors or team members.
Adults make up the fastest growing segment of our patient population today. Our staff works closely with your family dentist to help you obtain the smile you desire. Some adults are looking to improve their smile by replacing missing teeth or having veneers placed. We help your dentist by moving adjacent teeth to allow the most aesthetic result. Other adults are looking for a complete smile makeover or bite realignment, while some are unhappy with the appearance of their face. Whatever your needs, we are prepared to help.
With advancements in technology, there is a treatment available to suit your desires. The Damon Bracket System that we use produces exceptional results in treating adults while minimizing discomfort and delivering results in less time, with fewer appointments than traditional orthodontic appliances. Often times, extraction of teeth can be avoided as well.
For those who desire faster treatment without sacrificing precision of tooth alignment, SureSmile may be for you. Suresmile allows our doctors to utilize 3-D imaging, advanced treatment simulation, and custom archwire fabrication providing them with a greater level of efficiency and control of your orthodontic treatment. That means you finish treatment with the beautiful smile you wanted in less time. In fact, on the average, overall treatment time is reduced by 38%. Bassin and Hession Orthodontics is proud to be one of the few practices in our state to offer this technology to our patients.
Orthodontic problems that are quite severe and skeletal in nature can be devastating to ones' self image. Our doctors are extensively trained in Surgical Orthodontics and work with highly trained Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and Facial Plastic Surgeons in central New York to provide you with the highest level of care for severe facial skeletal problems.
For certain minor orthodontic problems, it may be possible to treat you without braces at all. Our doctors are Invisalign certified to provide this service. Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic retainers to move your teeth to a more aesthetic position. Ask our doctors if this is an option for you.
At Bassin and Hession Orthodontics, you are never too old to get the smile you deserve!.
